Self-help book for teenagers

by omgwtf 23. July 2009 12:07

Great. So, remember that book, The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne? Well, now there's going to be a new addition of the book... for teenagers. The book is due to come out this fall, and it's titled The Secret to Teen Power. The book will supposedly show "how teens can transform their own lives and live their dreams, by understanding and using the power they have in their hands," according to Simon Pulse. Great if it's motivational, I guess. Wait, no. Nevermind. Teens don't need to run around thinking they have all the power in the world. Really. How about a teen self-help book called The Secret to Not Getting Pregnant Before You Can Afford It? I think that would be a much better book for teenagers... especially with teen pregnancy rates rising so much in the U.S.

So... will you read this? Or buy it for your kid?

Kendra says something that makes sense!

by omgwtf 23. July 2009 11:41

That's right... Kenra Wilkinson has made a statement that I absolutely love and that makes sense and is smart! Kenra discussed Jon & Kate Plus 8 with E! News and she said "we don't watch that anymore. I watched back it was good and they weren't all Hollywood. I feel bad for the kids. If we do have a show, none of that's going to happen ... I want to be able to spend quality time with my child and not really give the world too much."

AGREED! So I'm guessing maybe Kendra won't have a crazy reality show all about her life and her kid? Oh, wait... it was just announces on Wednesday that she has signed on to star in a second 12-episode season of her show. Hm. Back down the ladder she goes.

Got diabetes??? Have some pig cells!

by omgwtf 23. July 2009 11:27

WTF.

So, a New Zealand biotech company, Living Cell Technologies, began a trial today (Thursday). This is an experimental treatment for Type 1 diabetes, in which 8 VOLUNTEERS will be implanted with cells from newborn pigs. Personally, I can't believe people actually volunteered for this. But they did. And others have volunteered for the same thing in the past. One trial with only 6 patients, and another with 10.

Anyway, the hope is that the cells will be able to delay the effects of the Type 1 diabetes, which include premature coronary illness, limb amputation as a result of poor circulation, and blindness. Agreed, that would be great if those things could all be way delayed. But there's something about implanting pieces of pigs into people that really freaks me the fuck out.

As for the risk of contracting a pig retrovirus infection, Professor Bob Elliott, medical director of Living Cell Technologies, said "there is no evidence of a risk." Hm. Don't care that there's no risk. Still creepy.

So, what happened to the people in the first 2 trials? Elliott said he saw increased insulin production in some subjects. Others, however, reject the pig cells, or the pig cells stopped producing insulin after a year. But, that's only 16 people, so it hardly counts.

Would you volunteer to be implanted with pieces of baby pig?

NYC's Naked Cowboy... for Mayor???

by omgwtf 23. July 2009 11:03

Oh yeah... that's right. New York City's Naked Cowboy (Robert Burck) is running as a write-in candidate against Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Burck said "I know how to do more with less ... You're not going tobe seeing me buying a whole new suit because I'm running for mayor. Not on the city's dime ... Being naked is a whole lot more than having no clothes on. It's about transparency in politics, it's about telling the naked truth."

Wednesday Burck listed off some of the things he would do as mayor... energy efficiency (apparently the guy doesn't use AC), taxi call buttons on street corners (which would actually be pretty awesome), and $10,000 loans to 1,000 small businesses at no interest (umm... wonder how that'd work). He also wants to build a Times Square chapel, where both straight and gay couples could mary in a "billion-dollar wedding business that will rival Las Vegas." Burck does have a degree in political science from the University of Cincinnati, so I suppose that could come in handy.

So, where is he getting funding for his campaign? Aside from the fact that he makes quite a bit of cash standing on the street in his cowboy boots, hat, and undies playing the guitar, Burck said "I have no expenses. I own 40 pairs of underwear, a car and a suitcase."

Well, good luck to you dude.

Mysterious BLOB floating off the coast of Alaska

by omgwtf 17. July 2009 11:23

There is a huge blob of stuff floating around, just going with the current. And just how big is this blob of crap?? 15 miles long!

So, of course, people were sent to investigate and try to figure out what the substance is.

Petty Officer 1st Class Terry Hasenauer said "It's certainly biological. It's definitely not an oil product of any kind. It has no characteristics of an oil, or a hazardous substance, for that matter. It's definitely, by the smell and the makeup of it, it's some sort of naturally occurring organic or otherwise marine organism."

So that's good news... it's not harmful oil or toxic waste or anything. So that rules those options out... but still, nobody knows what it is.

Gordon Brower with the North Slope Borough's Planning and Community Services Department also got a good look at the goop. Brower said, "That's one of the reasons we went out, because in recent history I don't think we've seen anything like this. Maybe inside lakes or in stagnant water or something, but not (in the ocean) that we could recall ... If it was something we'd seen before, we'd be able to say something about it. But we haven't ...which prompted concerns from the local hunters and whaling captains. From the air it looks brownish with some sheen, but when you get close and put it up on the ice and in the bucket, it's kind of blackish stuff ... (and) has hairy strands on it."

Samples have been brought in for analization. The large blog could just be a giant algae bloom. I'm curious!

Is Cox selling the Travel Channel?

by omgwtf 16. July 2009 10:54

Sources say YES!! The Travel Channel is estimated to be worth $600 million to $1 billion! Hot DAMN! And it's going up for sale in an auction sometime super soon, according to some anonymous sources. Hm. Anonymous always makes me wonder if it's true or not.

So, if they sell, how with the new owners handle it? I swear, if they do anything bad to Bridget's Sexiest Beaches, I will FREAK OUT.

Anyway, that's a ton of money if the Travel Channel really goes for as much as people are anticipating. I just hope whoever ends up with it doesn't fuck up the programming, because that would be a bummer!
